Home remedies for treating head lice

Dealing with head lice can be a painful affair; head lice live on the scalp and the hair shafts. They feed on the blood from your scalp. The occurrence of lice is highly common among children between the age of 7-15. Lice can spread from playgrounds, schools, sports, sleepovers, and other gatherings; you can also contract them if you were the clothes of an infected person, lay on the same bed as them, and use their toothbrushes or combs.

Home remedies for treating head lice
The treatment for head lice is not a major issue but needs to be undertaken at the earliest to avoid further spreading. Additionally, certain home remedies have been proven effective in managing lice.

1. Garlic
Even if garlic does not have the sweetest smell, and none of us want ourselves or our children to smell like garlic, but that’s what works in killing the lice. The spicy fragrance from garlic juice can suffocate the lice, subsequently killing them. All you need to do is grind 10 garlic cloves and mix them with two-three teaspoons of lime juice and apply it on the scalp. Let it stay for half an hour to forty-five minutes and then rinse it thoroughly with hot water.

2. Coconut oil and apple cider vinegar
This method typically stops the lice from multiplying, thereby stopping their growth and providing effective treatment for head lice. As coconut oil is very lubricating, it stops the lice from moving around freely. Firstly, you must rinse your head thoroughly with apple cider vinegar and allow the scalp as well as the hair to dry. After that apply coconut oil all over your hair, let it stay for 8-10 hours or overnight. Comb your hair the next day and even shampoo it, repeat this every day for a week for results.

3. Mayonnaise
Mayonnaise can be a weird remedy for the treatment for head lice, but it works particularly well. Mayonnaise has a lot of oil in it, which suffocates the lice and kills them. Apply full-fat mayonnaise all over your scalp, cover your hair with a towel or a shower cap. Let the mayonnaise stay for eight hours or overnight, wash it with shampoo and comb out the dead lice.

4. White Vinegar
White vinegar is high on acetic acid, which possesses the ability to kill lice. Make a mixture of white vinegar with water in equal parts. Apply this mixture thoroughly all over your scalp and the hair, wrap your hair in a towel and let the mixture stay for an hour or two. Wash it off with shampoo, repeat every day for best results.
